Are you planning to ship some freight from Japan to the Netherlands? Are you an importer in the Netherlands and expecting a shipment from Japan shipped as sea freight? Whatever the goods you are importing from Japan are, perhaps one of the things what most importers are concerned is the time it takes for sea shipping. We will show you how long international shipping takes from Japan to your destination.
When shipping from Japan to the Netherlands, it is most likely that you are shipping your cargo as LCL while some may be shipping as FCL (Full Container Load). LCL stands for Less-than-Container-Load shipments and it means you are using just a part of the shipping container while you use the entire space of a container when shipping as FCL. Many of major consolidators in Japan offer the services of consolidation services for LCL cargos to Rotterdam. Although shipments may occasionally be transshipped via Singapore most consolidations go directly to Rotterdam. Note, however, that the container vessels make port calls at a number of ports in Asia, Middle East and Europe before arriving at Rotterdam. Container Vessels make port calls at a number of ports in transit.
Normally shipping/sailing time from Yokohama or Tokyo ports in Japan to the port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands (port to port transit time) is 28 days.
The transit time would be about the same if the port of departure is Osaka or Kobe.
For instance, if a cargo leaves on a container vessel leaving on Sept 1 from Tokyo, it would be scheduled to arrive in Rotterdam port on Sept 29. The port-to-port shipping time from Japan to Europe is quite short. However, in the case of sea freight shipping, it is important to keep in mind that it takes quite a few days for customs clearance etc. before the shipment can actually leave Japan on a container ship.
The points below should also be considered.
1.LCL shipments are loaded in to consolidation containers at bonded warehouse (often referred to as Container Freight Station) at least a few to several days before the actual departure of the sailing date of the ship.
2.Shipments must be cleared through Japan Customs a few good days before the date when they are loaded into the consolidation container.
3.The frequency of consolidation to Rotterdam, Netherlands are normally once a week with the exception of holiday season. (Note that there are occasionally some weeks when there is no service)
Also, the sender/exporter must arrange delivery of the packages to the bonded warehouse (CFS) at the port a few good days before the customs clearance.
Taking all these points into consideration, from the time of delivery of the shipments to the bonded warehouse at the port of origin in Japan to its arrival at the port of Rotterdam would typically take between 40 to 50 days.
Also note that it is usually a few to several days after the vessels arrival at the destination port that a shipment is ready to be custom cleared. Sometimes it can take more when there is berth congestions etc.
Japan is the 4th largest exporter in the world and Netherlands is one of the Japan’s top trading partners which imported Japanese products by value - Netherlands is ranked No. 12. It is ranked No. 2 among the European countries.
Many Japanese consolidators offer consolidation (LCL) services from major ports in Japan to Rotterdam. It is also notable that such consolidators offer multimodal transportation to other inland European countries and cities via Rotterdam. There are services available to destinations such as Switzerland via Rotterdam and shipments to Marseilles, France are also transported via Rotterdam.
